Assignment11:BBC Discussion

Purple color is my comment
Red color is my questions
Blue color is teacher's answers

My commemt about BBC discussion

I didn't mean to post the assignmet deleyed.

I have tried hard to figure out some questions which I really didn't know,
not just ask quesitions about some certain situations.

I've got answers in previous days, but I hope I can post more questions.

I thought the deadline was on Sunday, so I didn't post my questions and comments.

( = .............. = ")

I post four questions on the BBC.

One question is about phonetics, but no one answer this question.

I really want to know the answer.

The first quesition

I have a queation about phonetics.

Does British English use r-colored when they pronunce the words such as board and poor nowadays?

In the past, living in the rural producing r-colored is much more than living in the urban?
Is it right?

Using r-colored is living in the high class or low class?

Thank you.

The second question

It has the same meaning in the some day and some day,

but "some day" really doesn't have a different meaning if some become an adjective?

(!!!!????)

"some day" and "someday"

What is mean between the two words?

I want to know how to use the two words?

Do they have different usages in a sentence?

posted by AussieLexie (U13880784)

Hello WuDonna, someday? and some day? ave the same meaning

(at some time in the future even though you do not know when)

and same usage but are sometimes written as one word and sometimes as two.

AL

The third question

The sentence I've read is from an English magazine which is called ALL+

The teacher said the sentence is wrong, so I didn't know if it is true or not.

(!!!!????)

"Many of the foods chocolate is in should only be enjoyed in moderation.

"Does someone know the structure of the sentence?

is in should only be?????

Thank You.

posted by Dan Slavonic Grumblebum (U8054546) ,

Not one of the author's brightest moments, I dare say.

Try reading the sentence like this;

"Many of the foods that contain chocolate should only be enjoyed in moderation."

The forth question

I ususally get confused when I am writing a piece of an article.

So I ask a question to know the exact usage in writing.

I think the definition is good for me.

in the end of: means finally, after a period of time... It is similar to eventually...

at the end of: I guess this phrase usually comes with OF something.

I want to know the usage of "in the end" and "at the end"?

Do they have different usage in a sentence?

Thank You.

posted by Low Flyer (U2221553) -networker

Hi WuDonna,

"In the end" tells you what happened after some thought, or uncertainty or change:

In the end, you'll just have to pay your debts.

I couldn't decide whether to have chocolate cake or mouse, so in the end I had both!"

At the end" just tells you where or when something is:

I go on holiday at the end of the week. My house is at the end of the street.

Yes. 

In the end? means finally, after a period of time?

It is similar to eventually?

Use it when you are saying what happens after everything has been discussed or thought about.

I planned to go to India but in the end I stayed home.

We listened to what the students had to say and decided they were right in the end.

At the end? means the final part (of a period of time/ a distance/an event)?

It is usually at the end of?

The troll lives at the end of the road.

They shook hands at the end of the interview.

I found out who the murderer was at the end of the book.

Dear WuDonna!

I think the two phrases have to be used differently.

1. At the end OF the story/ at the end of the day/ at the end of the lesson...

I guess this phrase usually comes with OF something.

2. In the end we went home/ We were in a hurry but in the end we managed to catch the bus...

I hope all my examples are correct and I could help you!

Have a nice evening!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mble/

BBC message board is useful for me to ask English questions.

Before I know the website, I usually go the "Imformation+" or "Google" to see if someone has the same English problem with me and I rarely ask a question on the Internet, but I think the website can get teacher's answers and it is raletively more accurate than other people's anwers on the other websites. Teachers is fun and interesting. I think I will use the website if I have any questions about English.

Listening, Speaking, and Pronunciation-Fall 2004

Course Description

This course is designed for high-intermediate ESL students who need to develop better listening comprehension and oral skills, which will primarily be achieved by detailed instructions on pronunciation. Our focus will be on

(1) producing accurate and intelligible English,

(2) becoming more comfortable listening to rapidly spoken English, and

(3) learning common expressions, gambits, and idioms used in both formal and informal contexts.

Lecture Notes
During the fall of 2004, four sessions of 21F.224 were recorded especially for OpenCourseWare. In these sessions, Professor Yoo works with students on some of the exercises covered in the handouts. The videos capture typical dynamics of the classroom, including the professor's lectures, students working together in small groups, and students participating in a classroom debate. Below are links to the videos.

Session 1 Lecture 18: Word Stress (cont.); Stress in Compounds.

Session 2 Lecture 19: Stress in Compounds (cont.); Sentence Stress and

Rhythm.

Session 3 Lecture 20: Rhythm (cont.); Prominence.

Session 4 Lecture 21: Prominence (cont.); Student Debate.

Comment:

Since it was about my course which I study, I choose the topic to watch.

Although the teacher wasn't an English teacher, still I could learn something which I didn't know before.

The teacher taught you how to pronouce words. Which place should stress and which place should become schwa, etc.

I think if one wants to improve his or her accent, I suggest they must watch the videos because it is worth it.

Here is some of my notes:

prepotsition doesn't get any stress

She was 'looking (at me).

She 'looked 'away (from me).

Verb.+Prepositions

He called (on the phone).

She turned (on a red light). (Schwa)

Verb+ Particle

She called off (the meeting).

She turned on (a red light).

Turn it on.---it can move

That's talk about the problem.(Particle)

That's talk the problem about. (X)

Assignment8: Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton

Wonderful Tonight
Artist: Eric Clapton Album: Slowhand Released: 1977
It's late in the evening

She's wondering what clothes to wear

She puts on her make-up

And brushes her long blonde hair

And then she asks me

Do I look alright

And I say yes, you look wonderful tonight

We go a party

And everyone turns to see

This beautiful lady

That's walking around with me

And then she asks me

Do you feel alright

And I say yes, I feel wonderful tonight

I feel wonderful

Because I see the love light in your eyes

And the wonder of it all

Is that you just don't realize

How much I love you

It's time to go home now

And I've got an aching head

So I give her the car keys

She helps me to bed

And then I tell her

As I turn out the light

I say my darling, you were wonderful tonight

Oh my darling, you were wonderful tonight

Today, I am going to introduce Eric Clapton who is an English blues-rockguitarist, singer, songwriter and composer.

He is good at playing guitar (you can see how well the performance of guitar he has in the beginning of the video) and he was called "Slowhand."

Because whenever Clapton broke a guitar string during a concert, he would stay on stage and replace it, the audiences would wait out the delay by doing.

The song "Wonderful Tonight" is my favorite song.

I heard the song from one of my brothers. He taught me how to play guitar when I was in the senior high. Although I finally gave up leaning the chores of the guitar, I still remember how my feelings are when he was singing with his guitar playing in front of me. After I went home, I quickly search the lyrics of the song and music videos.

I think the song is so beautiful that I can't help to start to imagine a lot of romantic scenes where I encounter a boy in a ball. : )

The song isn't just some words that put together, it seems like a man and a woman who are talking to each other in a wonderful night. We can see some of Chinese songs are also like that. The song makes me feel real and ususal and the scene of the song probably will happen to some of people. Isn't it romantic?

Also, I am fond of a boy who can sing love song plays guitar.

Do you think it will fascinate girls whatever the boy looks like?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following information is from http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=1373

Clapton wrote this in 1976 while waiting for his girlfriend (and future wife) Pattie to get ready for a night out.

(Eric Clapton ans Pattie Boyd)

They were going to a Buddy Holly tribute that Paul McCartney put together, and Clapton was in the familiar position of waiting while she tried on clothes

Pattie was married to George Harrison when Clapton expressed his love for her on the song "Layla."

Clapton and Harrison remained good friends, and Harrison even played at their wedding in 1979 (Pattie married Eric after Harrison).

Pattie inspired a lot of great songs. George Harrison wrote "Something" and "For You Blue" for her, while she inspired Clapton to write this, "Layla," "Why Does Love Have To Be So Sad," and "Forever Man," among others.

The day after they were married, Clapton brought Pattie on stage and sang thisto her at his show in Tucson, Arizona.

Pattie Boyd recalled to The Guardian December 13, 2008 that Clapton "was sitting round playing his guitar while I was trying on dresses upstairs. I was taking so long and I was panicking about my hair, my clothes, everything, and I came downstairs expecting him to really berate (scold) me but he said, "Listen to this!" In the time she had taken to get ready Clapton had written this song.

Eric and Pattie divorced in 1988. Their divorce was granted on grounds of "infidelity (disloyalty) and unreasonable behaviour (his affair with Italian model Lori Del Santo, who gave birth to their son Conor in August 1986)."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

More information about him: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Clapton

Clapton's close friendship with George Harrison had brought him into contact with Harrison's wife Pattie Boyd, with whom he became deeply infatuated(fascinated).

The Story of Layla and Majnun, a copy of which his friend Ian Dallas had givenhim. The book moved Clapton profoundly as it was the tale of a young man whofell hopelessly in love with a beautiful, unavailable woman and who went crazy because he could not marry her.

The two parts of "Layla" were recorded in separate sessions: the opening guitarsection was recorded first, and for the second section, laid down several monthslater, drummer Jim Gordon composed and played the elegiac (mournful) piano part.

In 1974, now partnered with Pattie (they would not actually marry until 1979)and no longer using heroin (although starting to drink heavily).

In 1984, while still married to Pattie Boyd, Clapton began a year-long relationship with Yvonne Kelly. The two had a daughter, Ruth, in January 1985. Clapton and Kelly did not make any public announcement about the birth of their daughter, and she was not publicly revealed as his child until 1991.

Boyd did not know of the existence of Ruth until 1991; she stated that "[what] cut deepest was that Eric had known about the child all along. While declaring undying love to me and pleading with me to go back to him, he had been paying Yvonne maintenance (means of subsistence) for the past six years."

Kelly and Ruth moved back to England, and the myth of Eric's secret daughter began as a result of newspaper articles published at the time.

Clapton and Boyd divorced in 1989 following his affair with Italian model Lori Del Santo, who gave birth to their son Conor in August 1986.

Boyd herself was never able to conceive (give birth to) children, despite attempts at in *vitro fertilization.

* 試管嬰兒胚胎植入 (In Vitro Fertilization, IVF).

* 受精後胚胎植入子宮腔者,稱為體外受精胚胎植入術
(In Vitro Fertilization Embryo Transfer, IVF-ET)

Their divorce was granted on grounds of "infidelity and unreasonable behaviour."

The early 1990s saw tragedy enter Clapton's life again. On 27 August 1990, fellow guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan, who was touring with Clapton, and two members of their road crew were killed in a helicopter crash between concerts.

Then, on 20 March 1991, Conor, who was four years of age, died when he fell from the 53rd-story window of his mother's friend's New York City apartment, landing on the roof of an adjacent four-story building. Clapton's grief was expressed in the song "Tears in Heaven", which was co-written by Will Jennings. He received a total of six Grammys that year for the single "Tears in Heaven" and the Unplugged album.

Full of excitement but comfortable, and relax.... : )

Layla
What'll you do when you get lonely
And nobody's waiting by your side?
You've been running and hiding much too long.
You know it's just your foolish pride.

Layla, you've got me on my knees.
Layla, I'm begging, darling please.
Layla, darling won't you ease my worried mind.

I tried to give you consolation
When your old man had let you down.
Like a fool, I fell in love with you,
Turned my whole world upside down.

(Chorus)
Layla, you've got me on my knees.
Layla, I'm begging, darling please.
Layla, darling won't you ease my worried mind.

Let's make the best of the situation
Before I finally go insane.
Please don't say we'll never find a way
And tell me all my love's in vain.

(Chorus)
Layla, you've got me on my knees.
Layla, I'm begging, darling please.
Layla, darling won't you ease my worried mind.

(Chorus)
Layla, you've got me on my knees.
Layla, I'm begging, darling please.
Layla, darling won't you ease my worried mind.

Tears in heaven

Would you know my name?
If I saw you in heaven
Would it be the same?
If I saw you in heaven
I must be strong and carry on
Cause I know I don't belong here in heaven

Would you hold my hand?
If I saw you in heaven
Would you help me stand?
If I saw you in heaven
I'll find my way through night and day
Cause I know I just can't stay here in heaven

Time can bring you down
Time can bend your knees
Time can break your heart
Have you begging please, begging please

Beyond the door there's peace I'm sure
And I know there'll be no more tears in heaven

Would you know my name?
If I saw you in heaven
Would it be the same?
If I saw you in heaven
I must be strong and carry on
Cause I know I don't belong here in heaven

And I know there'll be no more tears in heaven
